The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rod Brazier, and the Australian Business Champion for Indonesia, Professor Jennifer Westacott AC, visited Batam (Riau Islands) from 29–30 June 2025 to explore commercial opportunities between Australian and Indonesian businesses and investors.

Ambassador Brazier and Professor Westacott met with the Mayor of Batam and Head of BP Batam Amsakar Achmad and visited the Nongsa Digital Park and the facilities of three Australian companies operating in Batam: Gelflex, Austin Engineering and Thiess.

“The visit to the Nongsa Digital Park highlighted the exciting opportunities for Australian digital companies and investors, which has been made easier by the Digital Special Economic Zone,” said Professor Westacott. “The new National Data Centre presents opportunities for Australian collaboration and investment to advance Indonesian digital infrastructure, data protection and digital transformation efforts.”

“Australian companies Gelflex, Austin Engineering and Thiess are making the most of the opportunities provided by the Special Economic Zone in Nongsa Digital Park,” said Ambassador Brazier. “Indonesia is one of our closest partners, and it’s great to see these Australian companies investing in Batam, bringing jobs and technology to Indonesia, for export to the region and the world.”

The visit to Batam coincides with the 5th anniversary of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA). Since 2020, IA-CEPA has underpinned a doubling in trade between Indonesia and Australia and increased Australian investment into Indonesia.

Australian and Indonesian businesses are capitalizing on the benefits of this agreement and the Australian Government’s Invested: Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, which aims to increase Australian investment into Indonesia.

The Australian Embassy’s Jakarta Investment Deal Team is working with Australian companies and investors to highlight and create business opportunities and jobs between Australia and Indonesia.
