Batam, 18 January 2025 – The Minister of Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency (Menekraf/Kabekraf), Teuku Riefky Harsya, visited the Apple Developer Academy Building and Infinite Studios at Nongsa Digital Park, Batam. The visit continued with a discussion on the development of an integrated digital ecosystem to support sustainable creative economy growth, held at the Preview Room on Saturday, 18 January 2025.
Minister Riefky stated that the discussion served as an appreciation of what Nongsa Digital Park has achieved as an integrated Special Economic Zone (SEZ). He noted that the area has contributed to increasing the creative economy sector’s share in Indonesia’s national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Creative Economy as a New Engine of National Growth
“I fully understand the challenges of the past 20 years, as I was once part of the players and practitioners in this creative economy subsector. It has not been easy to survive, gain international recognition, and contribute to national GDP. The creative economy is an extraordinary sector and has become a new engine of growth for the national economy,” said Minister Riefky.
The Ministry of Creative Economy hopes that this visit will strengthen collaboration, identify solutions to existing challenges, and continuously promote sustainable creative economy development. This is expected to ensure that creative economy growth in the Riau Islands, particularly Batam, continues to progress, as the Riau Islands have been designated as one of Indonesia’s priority locations for creative economy development.
Expanding Global Reach and Developing Local Intellectual Property
“We are pursuing impact—opening up job opportunities from subsectors that have already developed at Nongsa Digital Park (NDP). Sub-sectors such as film, animation, digital applications, and local games must grow and spread across regions throughout Indonesia. At NDP, there are facilities for live production studios, animation post-production, and a game academy integrated with a data center. This is a highly potential location to reach international markets,” Minister Riefky added.
Meanwhile, Infinite Studios welcomed the positive collaboration and shared the long-standing challenges faced by Indonesia’s animation and film industry. There is strong hope for the development of local intellectual property (IP), particularly in animation and gaming.
“We have been developing creative businesses and services such as set building, visual effects, post-production, and animation, collaborating with many international OTT platforms. Our goal is also to create original content or local IP that can be enjoyed within the global digital ecosystem,” said Ghea Lisanova, General Manager of Infinite Studios.
Accompanying Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya during the visit were Deputy for Strategic Development of the Creative Economy, Cecep Rukendi, and Director of Infrastructure Facilitation, Fahmy Akmal. Also in attendance was the Head of the Riau Islands Provincial Tourism Office, Guntur Sakti.
